Complete Bestiary

This database is the most comprehensive you'll find on the web. I've spent countless hours on it, but I'm proud to present to you in the finest detail each of the enemies, bosses, traps, attacks, and more, from The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past.

To compile this data, I relied on several sources. Firstly, my extensive knowledge of the game. I've been a speedrunner for many years and am very familiar with the game engine and the behaviors of all enemies in detail. I also used the game's code (but please don't tell Nintendo, I'm not supposed to have it 😇) to get the code names of the enemies, and finally, a particularly useful resource was this GameFAQs article which lists a huge amount of data. It's based on a decompiled version of the game and provides some additional data regarding the GBA versions (modified Mothula stats, etc.)

Preliminary Information

In the game's code, the table containing bestiary data doesn't just include enemies; it also contains metadata related to the different sprites in the game. Thus, you can find data for NPCs and other things that have little to do with what Link can fight. So, I have only extracted the data related to enemies, and perhaps one day I will create a more complete version with all 215 entries.

It's also important to know that the statistics alone you'll find on each enemy's pages are not sufficient; there are many interactive elements located elsewhere in the code. A Link to the Past shines, among other things, thanks to its extremely varied bestiary, and a large number of enemies offer unique behaviors not seen anywhere else in the game, along with multiple interaction options. I have tried to document this as best as my knowledge allows.

The list below only includes the sprites, names, and descriptions of the enemies. If you click on their name or their sprite, you will access their detailed page where you can find additional information and all of their statistics. Enjoy!

Bosses

Illustration Name Description
Moldorm The boss of Tower of Hera. It is only vulnerable at the propeller at the end of its tail and has sudden and unpredictable movements. All other parts of its body cause a large recoil movement to Link, which can expel him into the void surrounding the platform where it is located. Also found in Ganon's Tower.
Armos Knights The boss of the Eastern Palace. A group of six enormous Armos statues that circle the room while leaping. When only one remains alive, it turns red and attacks with even greater vehemence.
Lanmolas The boss of the Desert Palace. Three sand worms that emerge, hover for a few moments, then burrow back. They don't specifically target Link, but generate projectiles that can harm him when they emerge from the sand.
Agahnim The wizard Agahnim. Sends energy orbs, blue orbs, or lightning bolts as attacks to Link, and can only be defeated by having his energy orbs returned to him, with the help of the Master Sword, or... the Bug-Catching Net?! For a complete description of this fight, refer to the Blue Balls page, Speedrun section.
Mothula Boss of Skull Woods. An enormous moth found in a room made solely of conveyor belts and spikes moving in all directions. Generates ultrasonics at regular intervals.
Arrghus Boss of the Swamp Palace. Fought in two phases:
  1. Arrghus slowly moves towards Link, periodically swirling its small clouds.
  2. Once all the boss's small clouds are defeated, it flies up, then dives towards Link, moving rapidly diagonally across the room. If it takes damage, it flies up again and so on until it is defeated.
Helmasaur King Boss of Palace of Darkness. A giant masked saurian-like creature that can attack either by releasing fireballs that subdivide into 3, then 4, or by delivering a tail whip that covers the entire room. It has two phases:
  1. It performs one of the two attacks separately and moves slowly. Link must strike its mask 17 times with the hammer to destroy it.
  2. Once the mask is destroyed, its weak point, the large green crystal on its forehead, becomes visible. It moves faster and can now perform both attacks almost simultaneously, making the fight very difficult.
Kholdstare Boss of Ice Palace. A combination of three clouds with an eye, initially encased in a block of ice. Once Link destroys it, the three clouds move freely and independently, diagonally, throughout the room. The entire battle is punctuated by snowballs falling from the ceiling and splitting upon impact.
Vitreous Boss of Misery Mire. An enormous eyeball steeped in what appears to be acid, accompanied by many similar small eyeballs. It has two phases: the first where it periodically casts lightning while sending its small eyes at Link, and the second, once all small eyes are decimated, where it emerges from the acid and lunges towards Link to chase him.
Trinexx Boss of Turtle Rock. An enormous turtle composed of three heads: one of fire, one of ice, and the last, which is the true boss, which initially just periodically extends its head in Link's direction. Once Link has defeated the two elemental heads with the Fire and Ice Rods, the boss's shell will explode, giving it more mobility to move around the room and attempt to charge Link.
Blind the Thief Boss of Thieves Town. This is the true form of what was posing as one of the abducted maidens; it reveals itself when Link exposes it to light. It floats ondulantly around the room and can either spit fireballs or launch a high-speed laser. When Link hits a head three times, it flies off independently, and another reappears on the boss's body, creating two attack sources. The boss is defeated when all three heads are vanquished.
Ganon The final boss, Ganon. He has 4 distinct phases as follows:
  1. He sends his trident flying towards Link and teleports to retrieve it.
  2. He summons flaming bats that circle around him before charging at Link one by one.
  3. He jumps and smashes the ground to make the series of tiles at the ends of the room fall, and sends a flaming bat at Link after each jump.
  4. He extinguishes the two torches at the bottom of the room and constantly teleports around the room, sending flaming bats at Link. He is invincible as long as the torches are out, and Link must relight them before he can attack him.
